Awards & Fellowships

The Graduate Award and Fellowship Program aims to recruit the best graduate students around the world and financially support them to pursue innovative research projects in nanoscale science and technology at UW.  The Program provides annual support on a competitive basis.  The recipients must reapply awards and fellowships annually for a maximum support of two or three years.  The annual competition takes place during the spring quarter.

  • Nanotechnology Graduate Research Awards support innovative graduate research projects in nanoscale science or nanotechnology through funding from the University of Washington Initiatives Fund (UIF). Applicants should have excellent academic records. UIF awards are provided for a maximum of two years. (more information)

  • Jonsson International Exchange Fellowships in an effort to initiate collaborations in Nanoscience, Photonics and related fields between the University of Washington (UW) and Linköping University (LiU) in Sweden, we have initiated new fellowships for international research experiences at Linköping University, Sweden. The fellowships will fund the salaries and travel expenses for UW graduate students and postdocs to go to Linköping University for one or more quarters to do research with a professor there in nanoscience, photonics or related fields. Ideally these would be done in a way that the UW professor here also will get involved, so that it can serve to seed-fund longer-term collaborations between UW professors and LiU researchers. Other Fellowship Funds

The list below contains reference information to outside sources of student funding. For postings as information comes in for new deadlines, programs, etc. Please see the NaNSA Facebook page.

  • Mary Gates Research Scholarship are competitive scholarships intended to enhance the educational experiences of undergraduate students at the University of Washington while they are engaged in research guided by faculty. We hope that with research scholarships, students may focus more attention and time, deeping their inquiry into a discipline or project with a reduced financial burden.(more information)
  • OSSI is a NASA-wide system for the recruitment, application, selection and career development of undergraduate and graduate students primarily in science, technology, engineering and mathematics disciplines. Opportunities for students in other disciplines are available.(more information)
  • Pathways to Science is a project of the Institute for Broadening Participation (IBP). Pathways to Science supports pathways to the STEM fields: science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. We place particular emphasis on connecting underrepresented groups with STEM programs, funding, mentoring and resources. (Undergraduate) (Graduate) (Postdoc)
  • Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internships (SULI) program encourages undergraduate students to pursue science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) careers by providing research experiences at the Department of Energy (DOE) laboratories. Selected students participate as interns appointed at one of 15 participating DOE laboratories. They perform research, under the guidance of laboratory staff scientists or engineers, on projects supporting the DOE mission. (more information)
  • UW - Integrative Graduate Education and Research TraineeshipIGERT is the National Science Foundation's flagship interdisciplinary training program, educating U.S. Ph.D. scientists and engineers by building on the foundations of their disciplinary knowledge with interdisciplinary training. Collaborative research that transcends traditional disciplinary boundaries and requires teamwork provides students with the tools to become leaders in the science and engineering of the future. (more information)
  • Undergradute Research Program is a campus resource with listings of many opportunities to gain experience and funding. (more information)
    • Research Opportunities Database includes several hundred undergraduate research opportunities at the University of Washington. Be sure to check the database periodically, as new opportunities are continually added.(more information)
  • Office of Merit Scholarships, Fellowships & Awards - General Scholarship Search (UW only) This search tool allows you to narrow down all of the available scholarships into a list of those you are eligible for, most broadly. The search tool will produce a list including those scholarships that meet all of the selected criteria AND those scholarships that are open in terms of the criteria selected. (more information)
  • Elings Fellowship: The California Nanosystems Institute (CNSI) at UC Santa Barbara invites applications for the Elings Prize Postdoctoral Fellowships in experimental nanoscience. Eligible research can be in any area of the physical sciences, biology, or engineering. The fellowships provide a salary of $60,000/yr. for two years, renewable for a third, along with benefits and research funds. (more information)
  • The Amgen Scholars Program: The University of Washington’s (UW) Amgen Scholars Program provides a transformative opportunity for some of the nation’s top undergraduates to explore and prepare for careers in scientific research (Read the press release ). This summer program places selected students in premiere research groups under the direction of UW faculty in the biomedical sciences and provides related seminars, career exploration, graduate school preparation, and other activities. The program enables students to explore connections between their undergraduate major areas of study and future post-graduate study focused on research in science, biotechnology and related fields. (more information)
  • William Wiley Postdoctoral Fellowship: To attract high-performing, newly graduated, junior PhD scientists who have the potential to become full time scientific staff at EMSL. The fellowship honors the distinguished career of Dr William Wiley, the former director of the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory and visionary leader of EMSL. (more information)
  • UW Environmental & Occupational Health Undergraduate Summer Research Program: Experience laboratory work first-hand under the mentorship of leading UW researchers. Explore graduate study options while participating in research activities and instruction. Learn about the dynamic field of environmental and occupational health. Work collaboratively on solving problems such as the effects of pesticides or air pollution. (more information)
