1.1 Use and construct maps, charts, and other resources. Design a simple map of the area to be observed in NatureMapping activities; include a key to explain symbols, such as pond, conifer stand, or marsh. Use maps, aerial photography, and satellite imagery data to interpret and classify spatial information. Update existing sateliite imagery by ground truthing existing polygons of vegetative data.
2.1 Describe the natural characteristics of places and regions. Observe and describe the physical characteristics of the local area, such as land forms, bodies of water, and vegetation. This information is used to determine NatureMapping habitat codes. Use observation, maps, and other tools to identify and compare the physical habitat characteristics of places where the same species occur. Note subtle differences in habitat that contribute to the presence or absence of a given species.
2.2 Describe the patterns humans make on places and regions. Observe and describe the patterns of habitats in the local area, such as agricultural use, forest management, and urban development. Analyze how social and cultural human characteristics shape the local environment and the wildlife that it can sustain.
3.1 Identify and examine people's interaction with and impact on the environment. Observe and describe the human characteristics of the local area, such as agricultural use, forest management, and urban development. The human impact is inherent in many of the habitat codes used for NatureMapping. Explain how the actions and interactions of human societies have affected and are affected by the local environmnent (i.e. cities, farmers). Analyze how environmental knowledge and responsible action can affect species' survival.
Analyze the different ways people use the environment, the consequences of use, and possible alternatives. Analyze and evaluate the possible benefits and consequences of people's use of local resources and land.
