Washington County Maps with Species List
View Animal Fact Sheets that are linked to maps.
Read about the Data editing process.
Sightings overlaid on the maps go through a coarse scale evaluation.
Note: Coarse scale means that all observations falling within the predicted
distribution range are accepted. Outliers (e.g. observations outside the predicted
range) have been reviewed. There is still a possibility of errors.
However, researchers and other experts using these data to learn more about habitat
use and to answer other questions will conduct further editing on a species-by-species basis.
Their reviews will constitute a fine scale evaluation.
Range distribution maps were not created for wintering birds, most pelagic (e.g., seabirds), and marine mammals. If sightings were submitted, these
locations are displayed over the state outline. Editing is more difficult, but as more data are collected, we hope patterns emerge to assist in the
development of range maps for these species.

Turtles (z = The species is known to occur in the state, but no Gap map was created)
There are 6 species of turtles native to Washington State and 1 introduced turtle and 5 species of turtles in California. There have been sightings of other introduced turtles in Washington (e.g., snapping turtles which we don't know if they are able to live and reproduce in our waters). We need data on these introduced turtles.
