Prologue and the First 100 Dreams

(1v) Thanks be to God, Who made the dream a part of prophecy, and blessings be upon our master Muhammed, the best of creatures, and upon his family and his companions, who were led to the true faith by Divine Guidance and attained eternal bliss. Yet, after that O seeker after Interior Knowledge and O desirer of the Truth! Know and be aware of the sultan of gnostics, the evidence of lovers, cognizant of the perfections of the Divine Lights, and the best knower of the discourses of endless mysteries, our Monarch, Monarch of Islam, may God grant him life until the Final Hour and the Time of Resurrection, his lordship Sultan Murad Han, the son of sultan Selim Khan, God’s mercy and grace be upon him. When he was dwelling and resident in region of Manisa in the heart-easing locale known as the guardian against hardship, he saw a dream filled with omens, in accordance with the Wisdom of God. Instantly, seeking its interpretation, he sent this strange dream with a servant to the Sufi masters, (2r) the pious, and the prominent learned men in the region for interpretation.

Upon receiving it, each of them was bewildered and incapable of interpreting it and considered it to be a muddled hallucination lacking Divine Inspiration. In the end, as required by Royal Order, the environs of the city were diligently searched and they heard tell of one of the disciples of Shaikh Şa‘ban Veli Efendi of the Khalwati Dervish order and the Spiritual Axis of the Age from Kastamonu, a man of ruined appearance, without name or fame called Şüca Dede, living as a recluse in a secluded nook. When the abovementioned servant went and found the aforesaid saintly figure, he related to him the already mentioned dream saying, “This is my dream,” and asking for an interpretation. His lordship the Shaikh —may God hallow his saintly inner mystery—knew, by [his] holy spiritual powers, that that dream did not belong to the aforementioned servant but likely to his lordship the Monarch, Refuge of the Faith, and [as such] he interpreted it. Afterwards, when that servant told his lordship the Monarch of Islam what had happened with that holy man exactly as it happened, his noble heart was immediately touched by attraction to the Lord Shaikh and he was stunned. In the end, he returned to his senses, wrote an affectionate letter and sent it with the servant who had brought him that news, inviting the holy man to his palace. On his part, the holy man responded to the invitation and he had an audience with the Monarch of Islam. Many words passed between them on the topic of Sufism. In the end, when his lordship the Sultan impulsively exhibited his intention to seek repentance and penitence from his lordship the saint, his lordship the Shaikh was unwilling and replied saying, “The guidance of sultans is a difficult matter.” Afterwards, (2v) in the realm of ideal meaning, there came a sign from Şa‘ban Efendi, who was, at the time, the master of his lordship the saint, and after he vouchsafed glad tidings saying, “Do not compare my son, his lordship Sultan Murad Khan to other sultans. Go thou, and guide him!” the saint, on his part, set about giving guidance and instructing him on the litany of praise. On his part, his lordship the Monarch submitted himself to the Shaikh and becoming a disciple on the path of struggle for faith, finally, by the favor of the Shaikh he completed the Path to Perfection and arrived at the Truth. However, while his lordship the Monarch was in his [the Shaikh’s] oyster shell of guidance, most of the time his noble custom was this: that he would write down completely, in his own noble hand, the dreams and Divine Inspirations that came to him and send them to the Shaikh, by this means informing him of his [spiritual] state. On his part, the Lord Shaikh would give him guidance by writing a reply and resolving his difficulties.

(1) DREAM

Upon groveling in the dust at the feet of his lordship my fortune-blessed father… O my fortune’s blessing, in a dream your humble servant witnessed that a person was reciting the Qur’an in a loud voice. Because of this recitation, we were so overwhelmed by ecstasy that we nearly lost our mind. Our father and mother came and restrained us only with difficulty. Then we also witnessed that a woman had written the image of a moon on her breast. My sultan’s will be done.

(2) DREAM

Upon groveling in the dust at the feet of my fortune-blessed father… In a dream, one witnessed that we were reciting the Joseph Chapter and interpreting it. In the part where Joseph’s brothers came to get wheat, while they were conversing with Joseph, he said, “Go and bring my father.” And however many responses were talked about, I gave a response to each of them. My sultan’s will be done. (3r)

(3) DREAM

Upon groveling in the dust at the feet of his lordship my fortune-blessed father… O my fortune’s blessing, this humble servant witnessed that we were standing on a bridge. A great river was flowing under the bridge. This humble servant was throwing into it some objects like [pieces of a] tree and fruit. And then, our mother came and said, “Is this time for the afternoon prayer? I have not [yet] done the noon prayer.” My sultan’s will be forever done.

(4) DREAM

Upon groveling in the dust at the feet of my fortune-blessed father… This humble servant witnessed in a dream that they set up a throne saying, “Sit down.” So we sat. This throne was moving on land like a ship moves on the sea. They said to us, “Each step of yours becomes a year-long road.” Then one also witnessed that we were flying in the air. We were going even faster than a thunderbolt. My sultan’s will be done.

(5) DREAM

O my fortune-blessed father, in a dream your humble servant witnessed that they brought the head of a human being. Yet, that head was quite small; as small as a walnut. And its color was green, its eyebrows and eyes were black. They said, “[It] dropped from a [mother’s] womb. Witness the might of the Truth.” It was very strange. O my fortune’s blessing, they had put that head in a bowlful of water; we took it out of the water. My sultan’s will be done.

(6) DREAM

O my fortune-blessed father, between sleep and wakefulness, a letter was given. It was written that “[The letter] mīm is eternal, [the letter] vāv is trustworthy, [the letter] lām is the “no” of the honor of the honor of the honor.”[1] My sultan’s will be done.

(7) DREAM

O my fortune-blessed father, just now, between [sleep and] wakefulness your humble servant witnessed that your lordship went ahead of this humble servant and led him somewhere. You said, “[T]his is the Station of Unity.” I looked at it. (3v) Above there was a curtain of white light. And it was also witnessed in the dream that we were standing at a strange Station. They said, “This is the Station of Unity.” While this humble servant was gazing at [it], that station began rocking just as a ship rocks in the sea sometimes this way and sometimes that. Each time it rocks, this humble servant recites, “Elif lām mīm Allah – there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of Existence.”[2] We keep on reciting this. It still rocks like a ship. My sultan’s will be done.

(8) DREAM

O my fortune-blessed father, between [sleep and] wakefulness a fragmentary colorless light appeared. Our mind became confused because of that light. O my fortune’s blessing, then in the dream someone came and said, “What news did you send to your master? He became extremely happy. Tears even ran from his eyes and he spoke thus saying, ‘God willing, what mystical stations and degrees might I also show him.” My sultan’s will be done.

(9) DREAM

O my fortune-blessed father, in a dream your humble servant witnessed that two persons came in and sat down. (11) DREAM

O my fortune-blessed father, in a dream, this humble servant witnessed that they give him a letter. On it was inscribed, “O My Murad Han, blessings upon you! (4r) Why do you not advise your father? Advise him. We have entrusted you to God.” This is how it was written; yet, the writing is not similar to [this] world’s writing. It was written in green. We read by means of [Divine] inspiration. My sultan’s will be forever done.

(12) DREAM

O my fortune-blessed father, in a dream, this humble servant witnessed that wheat was piled up like a mountain. Below that wheat the poor were standing. We had climbed to the top of that wheat and were distributing it to these poor people. And then, it also became apparent that we were teaching some people the Great Qur’an. The teaching was this: “Elif lām mīm. This is the Book about which there is no doubt,” up to [the word], “those who are successful.”[3] And after that, between [sleep and] wakefulness, it became apparent that we were following behind Lord Ali. He was on one horse, and we were on another. My sultan’s will be forever done.

(13) DREAM

O my fortune’s blessing, some righteous men tell us, “Don’t spend a lot of money; don’t waste it on this or that.” I thought to myself, “From now on, let us not do it so much.” Then, in our dream, they scolded us. Even His Lordship the Messenger pbuh came and showed us a pig saying, “This [pig] became like this because he hoarded his money and did not give it away.” And I also saw a woman. Her face had suffered an incurable illness. “Why did you become like this?” I said. She said, “Because I hoarded property,” O my fortune’s blessing.

(14) DREAM

O my fortune-blessed father, in a dream one witnessed that they were continuously reciting the Qur’an loudly in a great mosque. What they were reciting was this “Muhammed is not the father of [any] one of your men,” up to [the phrase] “of all things, Knowing.”[4] Yet, my fortune’s blessing, they inserted “In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful” (4v) into the middle of the verse. And, between [sleep and] wakefulness, it became apparent that Bekir Ağa came in and said, “The Shaikh said that he should sit in concealment so that no one may observe him.”

(19) LETTER

O my fortune’s blessing, I need not [follow] the path of rulers nor the path of governors. I need [to follow] the path of lovers, beggars, and those who continuously witness the beauty of Lord God the Truth and immerse themselves in it, O my fortune’s blessing.

(20) DREAM

O crown on my head, you had said, “Pray so that Lord God the Truth may remove the disaster of plague from the Muslims.” In the dream of this humble servant (5r) He said, “As the sultan of [this] World, you kill one and set another free. Saying, “Is this not the power of Lord God the Exalted Truth? He created this [member] this way and this [member] that way.” They showed us all our members one by one. And then they washed us, pouring water over us from head to foot. And, my fortune’s blessing, apart from this, they exhausted your humble servant; whatever the name of the Irresistible’s artistry is, thus did they do. They squeezed our body from head to toe. In the dream, we continuously repeated the name, saying, “The Irresistible, the Irresistible.” My sultan’s will be done.

(24) DREAM

O my fortune-blessed father, in a dream (5v) your humble servant witnessed that a few people came and took us away and made us gaze at the sky. In the hands of one, there is the Qur’an. We take that Quran and open it. It opens to the chapter “Those who set the Ranks,” and this poor servant reads it up to [the verses], “But when it descends in their territory, then evil is the morning of those who were warned.”[6] (6r) As soon as we said, “Indeed, your God is One,”[7] there came a cry, saying, “The eye perceives Him not, but He perceives all eyes; and He is the Subtle, the Acquainted.”[8] This is the Station of Oneness.” That was the Divine Call. (65) EPIPHANY

Upon groveling in the dust at the feet of his lordship my fortune-blessed father… This poor servant was favored by an Epiphany, praise be to God. However, this epiphany was not like the previous epiphany. There was no light. Previously the light of the beauty of God’s Glory would appear and from that the Divine Essence would happen. Just now, strangely we did not see it in that way again. I suddenly realized that had lost my mind and was destroyed. Instantly, an amazement. Instantly I look, and my mind cracks instantly. Five or six times there was such an epiphany. O my fortune’s blessing, explain to me what kind of thing this is, please. And then, like a blast of thunder, would come Divine Calls and Sacred Responses. Once a Divine Call would come, once there would be an epiphany. After each Divine Call there would be an epiphany. After there was an epiphany, I know that it was an epiphany, since my mind would be disrupted, and I would be destroyed. But then, I heard a Call from the Lord. Now, part of my soul returned to its place. But I had found a complete [sense of] consolation. O my fortune’s blessing, you see, the Divine Call has put me at ease. In part, my soul wandered but the consolation was wondrous. It was not like this for such a long time. There was no light whatsoever. Instantly we were atop a mountain of musk. (76) EPIPHANY

O my fortune’s blessing. Praise be to God, an Epiphany manifested itself to this poor servant. If you ask how it happened, first a black light came towards this poor servant and surrounded him. From that black light a Divine Call came, saying, “If it were not for the star of My Affection, I would do justice [to people].” Then that black light split into two parts. From within it, Beauty appeared as white light. From within that light something appeared that the tongue cannot express, that exceeds the limits of description. I strove and gazed intently. My eyes and body could not summon the strength and I spontaneously shouted “Allah” and lost my wits. (11v) Afterwards, one also witnessed in a dream that they brought a letter. It was written [therein], “[Even] If the scribe made an omission, My monarch, your beauty of character and generosity are endless.” My sultan’s will be done.

(77) DIVINE INSPIRATION

O my fortune’s blessing, a Divine Inspiration came saying, “We opened to you the doors of happiness and miracles and help and guidance and [spiritual] degrees. And We saved you from trouble and tried you in various ways.[22] You are Our darling and friend and intimate and trustee. And We guided you with a great guidance.” My sultan’s will be done.

(78) DIVINE INSPIRATION

O my fortune blessed-father, a Divine Inspiration came to this poor servant, saying “Verily, We have given you knowledge and gentleness and fortune, sainthood and miracles. Your prayer is acceptable and your speech is sound. Your enemies are crushed [by My might] and your loved ones are happy. Your grace is My grace, your glory is My glory, your deed is My deed, your words My words.” My sultan’s will be done.

(79) DREAM

O my fortune’s blessing, in a dream someone addressed this poor servant saying, “O my God, O Veiler [of Sins], O Creator of Works.” What is the wisdom [behind this], O my fortune’s blessing?

(83) DREAM

O my fortune-blessed father, one witnessed (12r) this in a dream that while sitting with a troop of people in a tent, the tent began quake. Because of the quaking we ran out. This tent collapsed upon those people. Another tent was set up in an isolated place. I went and entered into it and sat alone on a throne. There was no one there. That multitude was [still] under that [other] tent. My sultan’s will be done.

(84) DIVINE INSPIRATION

O my fortune-blessed father, in a dream it became apparent that a person in the form of a young man had bound someone of strange shape in chains and was leading him. A Divine Inspiration came to this poor servant saying, “It is Lord [Muhammed], upon whom be peace. He has bound up Satan, upon whom be curses, so that you may be safe from his evil-doing.” My sultan’s will be done.

(85) DIVINE INSPIRATION

O my fortune-blessed father, a Divine Inspiration came to this poor servant, saying, “My intended, My precious one, My desire, My beloved. You are from Me and I from you. Let there be no world without you. For My Glory’s sake, you are precious, you are sacred. You are pure and wise.” My sultan’s will be done.

(86) EPIPHANY

O my fortune’s blessing, praise be to God, this night a Manifestation of the Divine Essence was vouchsafed to me. But this one was strange. We were again surrounded by a black light and annihilated in God but we were so annihilated that it did not resemble the previous occasions. We were very nearly totally destroyed in reality. As for when we returned to our senses, we came to ourselves trembling and with difficulty. O my fortune’s blessing, until now we had never been thus destroyed. We used to be annihilated and quickly returned to our senses. Now, it did not happen like this. We were completely destroyed, my fortune’s blessing. In that manifestation, a command came without letters and without sound, saying, “From now on do as you wish.” My sultan’s will be done.

(87) APPARITION

O my fortune’s blessing, while just sitting, one had an apparition (12v) that in a [spiritual] world the Messenger pbuh was seated on a suspended throne and we were next to him. He mounted us onto his blessed back and said, “You are the master in the two worlds, you are the master in the two worlds.” What is the wisdom behind this, my fortune’s blessing?

(88) DREAM

O my fortune-blessed father, in a dream this poor servant witnessed that someone came and said, “Why did the Messenger pbuh reach the stage of the Beloved[ness] [of God]? With beauty of morals, with compassion, with liberality, with these qualities has he attained it.” My sultan’s will be done.

(89) QUERY

O my fortune’s blessing, first, at the outset, there was an Epiphany to this poor servant. At that time, the Messenger pbuh was sitting next to me. Was that the spirit of Muhammed or was it the Truth of Muhammed-ness, or was it Muhammed himself? The Messenger pbuh has appeared so many times in [my] dreams. Tell me what this is more clearly than you did before and may God the Truth, the Glorified and Exalted, give you recompense. My sultan’s will be done.

(90) WITNESSING

O my fortune’s blessing, one witnessed thusly, that it seemed as if Lord God the Truth, the Glorified and Exalted, kissed this poor servant on the mouth. But there was no Epiphany, but [it was] just by quality and image, my fortune’s blessing.

(91) DREAM

O my fortune-blessed father, between [sleep and] wakefulness it appeared that there was a sea without end. But the sea was green. From there we went ahead and there were three naked persons. Beyond them there was a red light amidst darkness and moreover it became apparent that we were going somewhere with Lord the Messenger pbuh. Together with the Companions, we took Lord the Prophet into our arms and kissed him on his blessed mouth. And then it appeared that our form changed into the form of the Prophet Hızır. We mounted a gray horse, galloped off powerfully, whip in hand, and said, “Whoever does not know God the Exalted will not be delivered from my hands. Him will I destroy.” (13r) Thus saying, we galloped off. My sultan’s will be done.

(92) APPARITION

O my fortune-blessed father, during the prayer tonight, an apparition came to my eyes that the Messenger pbuh was across from me dressed all in white. And this poor servant witnessed that a Divine Inspiration came into our heart, saying, “Glorified be your Lord, the Lord of Majesty, from that which they attribute [unto Him], and peace on the messengers! And praise be to God, the Lord of the Worlds!”[24] My sultan’s will be done.

(93) DREAM

O my fortune-blessed father, in a dream this poor servant witnessed this that your lordship the Messenger pbuh came and kissed this poor servant on the mouth. My sultan’s will be done.

(94) DREAM

O my fortune-blessed father, between [sleep and] wakefulness one witnessed that his lordship the Messenger pbuh was dressed in white and his blessed beauty was also white. He descended from the sky and stood beside us, my fortune’s blessing.

(95) DREAM

O my fortune-blessed father, in a dream one witnessed that Lord İbrahim and İsmail and İshak and Musa and İsa, peace be upon them, came. Each of them spoke words of good tidings. Afterwards there was a clear manifestation of lights. In all of them glad tidings were written, saying, “May the blessings you pray for come true.” My sultan’s will be done.

(96) APPARITION

O my fortune-blessed father, in a vision of mine, the Messenger, peace be upon him, appeared and rubbing his blessed hands over my face, he said, “Let your eyes be opened.” Then your Lord Ali came and greeted [me], saying, “May [your] friendship with God be blessed.” And in the morning, a Divine Inspiration came, saying, “We made you a [spiritual] guide and helper, and made you abundantly excellent.” My fortune’s blessing, the inspiration that came the other day left us extremely uneasy because it is inexplicable.

(97) DREAM

O my fortune-blessed (13v) father, between [sleep and] wakefulness it appeared to one that an Arab woman comes and kisses our hand. She speaks, saying, “In this life, I have two wishes. One of them is the beauty of God, the Glorified and Exalted. The other one is His approval. Will I achieve these wishes, what do you say?” and begs an answer from us. Moreover, one witnessed that the Messenger pbuh was at prayer, next to him someone else was praying with him. My sultan’s will be done.

(98) APPARITION

O crown on my head, while sitting a vision came that Lord the Messenger, peace be upon him, comes, takes our hand and leads us to a mystical station. A light appears. He leaves us in that light. Then he speaks [to us], saying, “Lord God the Truth took you into the embrace of His favor. You are in God the Truth, God the Truth is in you.” Then the light surrounded us. My sultan’s will be done.

(99) WITNESSING

O my fortune-blessed father, three times they killed this poor servant and brought him back to life. O my fortune’s blessing, I was standing in a desert land. The Messenger, peace be upon him, clings to this poor servant’s finger. He squeezes it such that I am nearly dead. Four or five times he does this. Next, this poor servant begins to cry out. He speaks, saying, “My Murad, it is a test of you. Afterwards, Gabriel pbuh comes down from the skies and taking this poor servant into his embrace, presses his face to mine. He speaks, saying, “Fear not, Murad; it is a test for you, do not dread [it].” We awoke in the arms of Gabriel. My sultan’s will be done.

(100) DREAM

O my fortune-blessed father, between [sleep and] wakefulness This poor servant witnessed that, in a desert land, something in the form of a tent had descended. While enjoying this thing, the Messenger pbuh came and spoke, saying, “Be still, Lord God the Truth, the Glorified and Exalted, has come in his might and magnificence to this thing.” We all are standing with our heads bowed. The Messenger pbuh comes and taking this poor servant’s hand, places him in the tent and himself shutting the door, remains outside. When this poor servant entered the tent it is full of black light and in it a pure liquid. From outside the Messenger pbuh calls out, saying, “Lord God the Truth Exalted, has provided you with the wine of passionate love. Do not hesitate, drink your fill”. And we, drank our fill copiously by the palm-full and wiped it on our faces and eyes. As we kept on drinking, we experienced the Shahada, a Divine Inspiration came, saying, “I am the One, you are unique.” My sultan’s will be done.
