NELC Convocation

The NELC Convocation is an intimate event for the department and your family to celebrate your academic achievements and is separate from the larger UW Commencement.  Unlike the UW Commencement, the department will highlight each graduate and graduates will have a chance to take pictures with their family as well as NELC students of your class. You may participate in one or both ceremonies. Participation is not required for graduation. Conversely, participation in either of these ceremonies does not guarantee graduation.



Undergraduate and graduate students who completed their degrees in Autumn 2015 or Winter 2016, or who applied to graduate in Spring or Summer 2016, are eligible to participate in the ceremony.


Date and Location

4:00 – 6:00 p.m. on Monday, June 6, 2016 at the UW Club.



The attire for the NELC Convocation is business-casual. This is not a cap and gown ceremony.



Each graduate may bring up to five guests to the convocation. Each graduate and their guests need a ticket to enter the ceremony.



Please be aware that the NELC Convocation is SEPARATE from the University-wide Commencement, however, you still need to use the UW Registration/Order Form to order your parking permits for either or both ceremonies and your cap and gown for the University-wide Commencement. Please allow an additional half-hour for parking and walking to the UW Club — the campus can be very congested on the days of Convocation events. The closest parking garage to the UW Club will be at Padelford Hall and parking here will cost $15 (if your visit is less than four hours, be sure to stop at the gatehouse as you exit for a prorated refund).

*Be sure to tell the traffic guide, “I have arranged parking under ‘NELC’,” so that they can direct you to the correct place.


Disability Accommodations

The University of Washington is committed to providing access and reasonable accommodation for individuals with disabilities.  Graduating students or guests may obtain disability parking permits (see "Parking" above) via the Registration Order/form. Students are encouraged to determine their guests' needs before purchasing.

RSVP for Convocation

Please RSVP to the Graduate Program Assistant in the NELC Main Office at no later than May 16, 2016 to let us know whether or not you plan to attend.

We will list your name in the program, whether or not you attend. If you do not wish to be listed in the program, please email by the RSVP deadline.


Students who are attending Convocation should send the information requested below along with their RSVP.

  1. Write your name as you would like it to appear in the program (we will use your first and last name you used for registration unless otherwise noted).
  2. Write how your name is pronounced.
  3. What are your plans after graduation? These plans will be announced at the ceremony. (Note: Changes in plans should be sent to no later than Wednesday, June 1.)
  4. Have you completed or do you plan on completing university/departmental honors? Please indicate which.
  5. How many guests are you bringing? Graduates may bring up to five guests.
  6. Can we use your image online (NELC website/Facebook/Twitter)?


Once you have emailed the Graduate Program Assistant you can pick up your tickets from the NELC Main Office (Condon 327-A) starting May 17 through May 31, 2016. The office is generally open from 8:30am-2:30pm, Monday-Friday, but it may be closed occasionally between those hours.

All graduates and their guests must have a ticket to enter Convocation.

Important Notes for NELC Convocation Attendees

  • If you sign up for the NELC Convocation, we assume that you plan to attend.  If you must cancel, please contact the department office as soon as possible (, but no later than 12:00 p.m. the day of NELC Convocation.

  •  A packet will be prepared for you.  Be sure to pick it up when you enter the UW Club.

  • The NELC Convocation will begin promptly. We ask that attendees and guests be seated by fifteen minutes before the ceremony starts. 

  • Students will be introduced individually.  Please move toward the speaker while he/she introduces you.

  • A group photo will be taken after everyone has received their certificates. If you do not want your image on the NELC website, please do not participate.

  • Light refreshments will be served after the ceremony
