NELC Teaching Assistantships

The Department of Near Eastern Languages & Civilization accepts applications for Teaching Assistantships for the following Summer quarter and academic year on JANUARY 15th. Each year the department has both year-long and quarterly Teaching Assistantships available. Most of the available teaching assistantships are half-time positions (50% FTE), and carry a monthly salary, tuition waiver (up to a maximum of 18 credits per quarter), and health benefits, during the quarter(s) in which the teaching assistantship is held. During each quarter of a teaching assistantship, the student must be enrolled in a minimum of ten credits of graduate coursework leading to a degree (2 credits in Summer). All new contemporary language TAs in NELC must enroll in NEAR E 595 in Fall quarter of their first year of teaching. After the TA has completed NEAR E 595 once, they will register for NEAR E 600 for one credit hour every Fall quarter, as long as they continue to teach language courses for NELC.

Graduate students and graduate applicants interested in and qualified for teaching assistantships in NELC courses are encouraged to apply by the JANUARY 15th deadline, following the application procedure below. Applications submitted after the priority deadline may be successful, but cannot be guaranteed consideration.
Application Procedures: Submit by JANUARY 15th:

  1. a completed TA application form (pdf file)
  2. a letter of application stating your qualifications
  3. two letters of recommendation

Applicants who have previously held a NELC TA position in the course or area for which application is being made need submit only a letter of application and at least one letter of evaluation from the faculty member who supervised the applicant during the previous TA appointment in that course or area.

NELC M.A. applicants need not submit letters, as they are with the application package.
