Frequently Asked Questions

  1. Required application materials
    a. Applicants need to register through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) in order to apply. Please go to http://www.aamc.org/services/eras/ for guidelines and instructions on how to apply to our program.
    • Completed online application
    • Current photograph
    • Personal statement
    • At least three letters of recommendation, including at least one from a neonatologist who has worked with the applicant and one from the Program Director.
    • Dean's letter or MSPE (Medical School Performance Evaluation)
    • Medical school transcript
    • Parts 1, 2 and 3 of the USMLE
    • If a graduate of a medical school outside the United States, Canada or Puerto Rico, a valid ECFMG certificate or one that does not expire prior to the start of the fellowship
    • If a not a citizen of the United States or a permanent resident, a copy of current, appropriate visa

  3. Visa Policy
    a. The visa policy for the University of Washington School of Medicine requires foreign nationals to obtain a J-1 visa sponsored by the ECFMG. The University of Washington Medical Center does not generally provide H1-B sponsorship unless otherwise ineligible for a J-1 visa. H1-B visas are reviewed on a case-by-case basis and are subject to approval by the University of Washington GME Office and the University of Washington Office of the Provost.Below is the link to the UW SOM visa policy.

  4. International Medical Graduates
    a. We are accredited by the Accredited Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), which requires all International Medical Graduate applicants to be ECFMG certified and have completed the first two steps (J-1 visa) or all three steps (H1-B visa) of the USMLE before they apply.
