JOURNAL CLUB (Monthly)

The purpose of the Journal Club is to provide the renal fellows with the opportunity to develop and improve their ability to conduct a critical analysis of data reported in the clinical and basic science literature.  Journal Club is directed by Drs. Specific faculty members will be invited for their expertise as it pertains to the manuscript reviewed.  Manuscripts will be distributed prior to the journal club via email.  Active participation during the journal club is encouraged

Nephrology Days started in 1985 as part of our regionalized medical education program for Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana and Idaho (WWAMI).  Neph Days are supported by the non-profit Northwest Renal Society, whose sole purpose is to plan and conduct each meeting.

Approximately 180 nephrologists from Washington, Oregon, Alaska, Montana and British Columbia belong to the Society, and about 75 attend each session.

A major them, such as transplantation, dialysis, or hypertension, is selected with input from the membership.  One or two prominent outside speakers known for their research and teaching are invited to each meeting and usually asked to speak twice: once on his/her research and one on clinical aspects in his/her area of expertise.

This program is perfect not only for those who couldn’t attend the ASN conference but also for those attendees who missed several key presentations. Renal Week Highlights meetings will cover these key areas of nephrology: Parenchymal Disease, Transplantation, Hypertension, ESRD, Disorders of Bone and Mineral Metabolism, and Clinical Nephrology.

SCRIBNER SOCIETY

Location:       Local restaurant.
Day/Time:      Thursday evenings (2-3 per year)
Organizer:      Stuart Shankland, MD
stuartjs@u.washington.edu

This newly developed conference was initiated in 2005 to provide opportunities to meet with colleagues outside of one’s immediate practice. The mission of this society is to bring “town-and-gown” nephrologists together and to provide a unique and accessible venue.  Dr. Belding Scribner, an original Division of Nephrology faculty member and the first Fellowship Program Director, believed in a very close relationship among all nephrologists.  The goal is for nephrologists from around the Northwest to meet in a relaxed atmosphere and participate in a credited CME program.  Approximately 70 nephrologists attend each event.
