Welcome

2007 Faculty Retreat

W elcome to the Division of Nephrology at the University of Washington.

The Division of Nephrology offers comprehensive clinical programs for acute and chronic renal problems in both inpatient and outpatient settings, located at three hospital sites (University of Washington Medical Center, VA/Puget Sound Healthcare Systems and Harborview Medical Center), and the Northwest Kidney Centers and its satellites. The University of Washington Medical Center also offers a comprehensive clinical program in kidney and kidney-pancreas transplantation, providing full-time transplant medicine support to the inpatient service and outpatient follow-up clinics.

The division also has an active and accredited renal fellowship program, directed by Dr. Rudy Rodriguez, which offers three training pathways: Subspecialist/Basic Scientist, Subspecialist/Clinical Investigator, and Advanced Clinical Training.

The University of Washington School of Medicine is one of the most highly rated in the nation. It was recently ranked by US News & World Report as the number 1 medical school in the United States in primary care training for the 14th straight year, and was ranked 6th as a research university. In a rating of America's best hospitals (US News & World Report, 2007) the University of Washington Medical Center was ranked eleventh nationally. The University of Washington School of Medicine has the second largest amount of NIH research funding among medical schools in the United States and is ranked first among public institutions. In addition, the Department of Medicine at the University of Washington has consistently been rated among the five most popular training programs in internal medicine in the United States.

Fellows in our division find that the locale is almost as attractive as the program itself. In multiple surveys, Seattle has often been cited as one of the most livable cities in America. It has all the cultural resources of a large city, including professional teams in all major sports, unmatched outdoor recreational opportunities, and a burgeoning economy anchored by Boeing, Microsoft, Starbucks, Amazon.com, and a large biotechnology community.

A detailed description of the clinical services and the Fellowship Program in Nephrology is included in this site, as well as an overview of our research programs.
