Biography

Phillip F. Chance, MD, is currently Chief, Division of Genetics and Developmental Medicine in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Washington School of Medicine. He has a joint appointment as Professor of Neurology, and also holds the Allan and Phyllis Treuer Endowed Chair in Genetics and Development at Childrens Hospital. He received his BA in Zoology from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville and his MD from the University of Tennessee at Memphis. He completed a fellowship in Genetics and a residency in Neurology at the University of Washington and was then was appointed Assistant Professor of Pediatrics and Neurology at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, Nashville, a position he held until he left to complete a residency in Pediatrics at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, where he was also appointed Assistant Professor of Pediatrics. He was later recruited to Childrens Hospital of Philadelphia where he was Associate Professor of Neurology and Pediatrics at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. He has held his present position since 1998. He has been or is a member of Phi Kappa Phi, 1974 and Sigma Xi, 1978. He received the Clinical Investigator Development Award (NINDS), 1986; Basil O'Connor Award, March of Dimes, 1986; American Society for Clinical Investigation, 1996; Member, American Neurological Association, American Academy of Neurology, Peripheral Nerve Society, American Society of Human Genetics; Medical Advisory Committee, Muscular Dystrophy Association, Joubert Syndrome Foundation, Charcot-Marie-Tooth Association; Certified, Clinical Genetics and Molecular Genetics, American Board of Medical Genetics, 1993; Fellow, American College of Medical Genetics, 1997; Member, NINDS Training Grant and Career Development (NST) Review Committee, 1996 to 2000; Editorial Boards, Neuromuscular Disorders, Journal of Contemporary Neurology. He has published over 75 peer reviewed articles and communications, authored 33 book chapters, and is a frequent lecturer across the country on various aspects of his research on inherited neuromuscular diseases.
