Residents are encouraged to spend time on the Neurosurgical service, at either Harborview or the UW. Harborview affords a rich experience in neurologic trauma and acute neurologic decompensation. There is close cooperation with the Neurology and Neuro-ICU teams, and many shared patients. Weekly conferences in a variety of Neuroscience-related disciplines help round out the experience. The UW hospital specializes in epilepsy and tumor surgery, with Dr. George Ojemann performing many of these cases. Once per week, complicated patients are discussed at the tumor board with different subspecialists offering opinions on each case. There are daily outpatient clinics, and further opportunities to learn about acute and chronic neurosurgical patients involving the Pain Service (Anesthesia) if there is interest.
