Neurological Surgery Rotation
Residents are encouraged to spend time on the Neurosurgical service, at Harborview Medical Center (HMC), Seattle Children’s Hospital (SCH) or the UW Medical Center (UWMC). HMC affords a rich experience in neurologic trauma cerebrovascular disease, epilepsy, skull base tumor, pituitary, complex spine, gamma knife and congenital neurosurgery. There is close cooperation with the Neurology and Neuro-Critical Care teams at all three hospitals, and many shared patients. At HMC, there are weekly Neurological Surgery Grand Rounds and three other weekly teaching conferences to include a Critical Care Conference, skull base tumor board, and pre-operative neuro-radiology teaching conference. The UWMC specializes in malignant tumor surgery, acoustic neuroma, deep brain stimulation and minimally invasive spine. There are two academic conferences to include the brain tumor SCCA tumor board and a resident neurosciences pre-operative teaching conference. The Pediatric Neurosurgery team offers all aspects of the broad field of pediatric neurosurgery from epilepsy surgery to tumor surgery to hydrocephalus management. There are excellent weekly conferences to include epilepsy conference, craniofacial and preoperative neurosurgery conference. On this rotation, residents are encouraged to assist or observe in surgical procedures if they are interested in the psychomotor aspects of neurological surgery.
