About Us

The UW Chiari Malformation Clinic is a part of the University of Washington Department of Neurological Surgery, and is committed to helping patients obtain the most successful Chiari I Malformation and Syringomyelia treatment available.  Our treatment is longitudinal and extends far past the surgery.  Our neurologists, neurosurgeons, rehabilitative medicine physicians, and physical therapists are some of the leading in the country in treating these conditions, and are committed to helping you receive an excellent course of treatment. In fact, our neurosurgeons have literally performed hundreds procedures for Chiari, and have the experience to make you feel confident in your decision on whether to seek surgical treatment or conservative, non-operative treatment.

Dr. Ellenbogen is the neurosurgeon who performs the surgery and has many years of experience in treating patients with Chiari malformation. He treats both children and adults.  Dr. Ellenbogen is assisted in the operating room with some of the best and brightest  Neurological Surgery residents in the country, from the University of Washington.  The residents provide 24/7 meticulous and compassionate care of each patient.  The National Institute of Health (NIH) has even funded a study in which UW investigators (Drs. Buchwald, Maravilla and Ellenbogen) are studying the relationship of patients's symptoms and neurological findings with Chiari malformations.

For the treatment of our patients, we utilize both Harborview Medical Center (adults) and The Children’s Hospital and Regional Medical Center (children). Both of these world-class facilities are located in beautiful Seattle Washington and boast fully staffed Neurosurgical Operating rooms and Neurosurgical and Pediatric Intensive Care units, respectively.

Dr. Ellenbogen’s clinical practice focuses on Chiari Malformations, Syringomyelia, Pediatric and Adult Brain Tumors, Craniofacial Anomalies, Head and Spine Trauma, Minimally Invasive Brain Surgery and Spine Surgery.

Dr. Ellenbogen has published journal articles on Chiari malformation, they are listed here:
