Symptoms

You may be thinking that you've seen this chart before on our website, perhaps from the "Chiari" section?  Well, this is for a reason!  Since the Chiari malformation is the leading cause of syringomyelia, most patients who have syringomyelia will also present with symptoms of a Chiari malformation.

Just pay particular attention to the section "Spinal cord issues" for symptoms that specifically apply to syringomyelia.  It is also important to note that the symptoms will always relate to where the cavity is located in the spinal cord.

Remember that an MRI is the only way to confirm and properly diagnose this disorder.

Did you know...

that it is very important to get surgical treatment before you start to experience muscle weakness?

This is usually not seen until the syrinx cavity becomes very large, so don't let it progress to this point!

Usually, nerve damage that causes severe muscle weakness will not be completely reversed, even if the syrinx collapses after surgery.
