John Howe, M.D.
Clinical Professor
Dr. Howe is a Clinical Professor of Neurological Surgery at Harborview Medical Center. He received his BA from Lawrence University in 1967 and his M.D. in 1971 from Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine.
Dr. Howe completed his Neurological Surgery Residency in our Department in 1977. Subsequently, he was an Assistant Professor of Neurological Surgery at the University of Washington until 1982 and then became a Staff Neurosurgeon at Group Health Cooperative of Puget Sound.
In addition, he has been a Staff Neurosurgeon at Virginia Mason Hospital since 1996.
He has been deeply involved with administrative work within Group Health and has made many contributions to the medical community. At Group Health he has served on a variety of Ethics and Values committees as well as on the Committee on Practice Efficacy for Low Back Pain Care. At Virginia Mason Medical Center, he has served on the Perioperative Committee and the Medical Staff Executive Committee.
Dr. Howe's service to the field has been exemplary. Over the past 25 years Dr. Howe has served on WSMA, ACPHR and IHI committees on back pain assessment and outcome. He has a strong record of publication and presentation in the assessment of pain and pain management.
