Richard Rapport, M.D.
Clinical Professor
Dr. Rapport is a Clinical Professor of Neurological Surgery at Harborview Medical Center. He received his BA from Lawrence University in 1965 and his M.D. in 1969 from the University of Michigan School of Medicine. He interned in Surgery at the University of Chicago School of Medicine in 1969-70 and was an NIH Associate at the NINDS Applied Neurological Research Branch from 1970-1972.
Subsequently, he attended Neurological Surgery Residency at the University of Washington between 1973-1978. Dr. Rapport has been a Staff Neurosurgeon at Group Health Cooperative of Puget Sound since 1980 as well as a visiting Professor of Neurosurgery at the University of Malaya School of Medicine and the University of Hue School of Medicine in Vietnam.
Dr. Rapport has been involved in issues of social justice, and his writing is widely published in various forms. He has published two books of non-fiction, PHYSICIAN: THE LIFE OF PAUL BEESON (Barricade Books, 2001) and NERVE ENDINGS: THE DISCOVERY OF THE SYNAPSE (WW Norton, 2005). Both were nominated for the Washington State Book Award, and NERVE ENDINGS was nominated for the European Science writing award, The Aventis Prize. Several of his more than thirty published essays were nominated for the Pushcart Prize, and one was noted in BEST AMERICAN ESSAYS, 1998."
He has a strong record of scientific publication, with 38 peer reviewed articles appearing in high value journals and 13 abstracts. In addition, he has given numerous invited lectures ranging from Grand Rounds at the UW, to the Annual History of Medicine Lecture at the Mayo Clinic to the Commencement Address for the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine.
