HMC, a 413 bed hospital, is a jewel in the national health care system. Not only is it the only Level 1 shock-trauma unit for the five state WWAMI region (Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana and Idaho) but it is also the model for Medic 1 and 911 systems throughout the United States. In addition, HMC coordinates the operation of Airlift Northwest, providing emergency air transport to the WWAMI region.

The neurosurgery service specializes in the management of acute trauma and acute vascular disease (e.g., 200-250 patients with aneurysms are operated upon annually), as well as other neurosurgical problems such as brain tumors and spinal disorders. Based on this experience, HMC has pioneered treatments in post-trauma epilepsy, subarachnoid hemorrhage, spinal cord injury and critical care.

Facilities include the neurosurgical stroke and trauma ICU, the Gamma Knife Center at Harborview Medical Center (which houses the most advanced gamma knife system available), and the Regional Epilepsy Center.

HMC is owned by King County and operated by the University of Washington. In addition to providing specialized health care for critically ill patients in the WWAMI region, HMC serves as the community hospital for King County.
