The UWMC serves as the primary teaching hospital for the five state WWAMI region. Founded in 1959 and remodeled in 1998, it is a 450-bed comprehensive care facility that is consistently ranked as one of the best hospitals in the nation and the top primary-care medical school in the country.

The neurosurgery service at the University Hospital specializes in neuro-oncology, neuro-endocrine disorders, skull base tumors, complex spinal disorders, interventional neuroradiology, radiotherapy, and the neurosurgical treatment of pain, spasticity and epilepsy. In this capacity, it has been an international pioneer and model for modern neurosurgery.

UWMC is a partner in the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance which combines the clinical and research capabilities of the University Hospital with the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center http://www.fhcrc.org/ and Children’s Hospital & Regional Medical Center http://www.seattlechildrens.org/ .
