The VAPSHCS, a 400-bed facility completed in 1986, is the VA’s regional neurosurgical referral hospital for the Pacific Northwest, including Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana and Idaho.

Clinical emphasis is on a broad range of disease, including brain tumors, spinal disorders, peripheral neuropathy and vascular disease. In addition, because the nationally recognized Spinal Cord Injury Unit is located here, rehabilitation of complex spine and spinal cord injuries is managed by a multi-disciplinary team of neurosurgeons, neurologists, and rehabilitation physiatrists.

The VAPSHCS is staffed by University of Washington faculty and remains a leader in VA health care. Recently, it has served as a national model for development of a paperless medical charting system.
