As a Neurosurgical Department, the University of Washington is one
of the largest recipients of NIH and private funding in the United States.
With over 30 faculty members actively involved in basic science and
clinical research, the department provides a fertile environment for
scientific investigation.
Virtually all areas of neuroscience are being investigated including:
- Cerebral Ischemia and Neuroprotection
- Cerebrovascular Dynamics and Physiology
- Cortical Localization
- Epilepsy
- Diagnostic and Therapeutic Ultrasound
- Mechanisms of Neuronal Cell Death
- Neural Regeneration
- Neuro-Oncology, Pain
- Pediatric Neurosurgery
- Peripheral Nerves
- Skull Base Surgery
- Spine
- Stem Cell Biology
- Trauma
The Department utilizes a broad range of cutting edge technology to
accomplish its research goals. Investigators routinely apply advances
made in imaging sciences, neurophysiology, genomics and proteomics.
Research in the Department is exceptionally collaborative and involves
faculty, residents, post-doctoral fellows, medical, graduate, undergraduate
and high school students. Monthly forums for sharing new developments
in the fields of neuro-oncology and neuro-degeneration, in addition
to more general research meetings, enhance the research experience for
all members of the Department.
Research facilities are located at the University of Washington, Harborview
Medical Center, Veterans Administration Puget Sound Health Care System,
and Childrens Hospital and Regional Medical Center.
