Research Opportunities

Each resident is encouraged to direct his or her interests and talents toward the development of an original research project, and each has the opportunity to spend at least 24 months pursuing laboratory investigation. The residency training program can be tailored to allow for additional laboratory time, with the research discipline and topic selected by the individual resident. On completion of the training program, residents will be capable of independent research in both laboratory and clinical environments.

Many of our residents have successfully competed for research fellowships from the NIH, AANS, AHA, ACS and other funding agencies (see Awards section below).

The Department offers extensive laboratory research resources in multiple areas, including neurophysiology, cerebrovascular and vascular smooth muscle physiology, transplantation, neuro-oncology, neurohistology (including electron microscopy), behavioral physiology, developmental biology and molecular neurobiology. Should a resident's research interests be in other areas, the comprehensive program in the neurosciences at this institution permits arrangements to be made for laboratory experience in other University departments. Close associations are maintained with the Departments of Pathology, Neurology, Pharmacology, Radiology and Radiation Therapy, Physiology and Biophysics, Bioengineering, and Biological Structure.

Studies are underway in the Department of Neurological Surgery in the following areas:

Award, Publication, and Grant Submission
The Department of Neurological Surgery provides residents with guidance and assistance in submitting their research papers for publication and their grant proposals for funding to federal and other agencies. In addition, the department facilitates the identification of awards and funding opportunities for residents. Because many faculty members sit on editorial boards for peer-reviewed journals, serve as editors for textbooks, and are actively involved with various neurosurgery and neuroscience societies, residents have many unique opportunities to write book chapters, present at and attend national and international meetings and participate in the development of new technologies.

"Personal Preferences in Neurosurgery"
Emeritus Clinical Professor, David Pitkethly, M.D. has created a teaching tool for residents, called “Personal Preferences in Neurosurgery” (pdf file 2 mb). This simple illustrated guide is an instructional description of how to do basic neurosurgical procedures that trainees in quaternary medical centers sometimes don’t see much, but will in other settings.
