Although it's right next to I-5, this medium size (135 units) property
is designed to keep freeway frenzy well at bay. The building faces into
a quiet courtyard with a pool, and the outer windows are well insulated.
There's a fitness center, restaurant, room service, and all the amenities
of a full-service hotel. The University of Washington campus is just five

are quite compact, but efficiently laid-out. All are non-smoking and local
phone calls are free--a real rarity in the lodging industry these days.
Most rooms lack a bathtub; in exchange, you get a fairly lavish continental
breakfast that includes waffles, hot and cold cereals, fruits and bagels.

Built in 1929, the inn evokes the solid, protective aura of visiting Grandma's
flat. Inviting entry nooks, with original brass mailboxes, lead to immaculate
and comfy kitchenette apartment-rooms. Fresh curtains, bedspreads on firm
mattresses, new carpeting and a friendly staff. Outside, sip tea or soak
up sun in the lushly landscaped patio courtyard.
The Ace Hotel
2423 1st Ave
Seattle, WA 98121
Phone: (206) 448-4721
Fax: (206) 374-0745
Its sparsely decorated lobby could almost pass for modern art--it's not
an inviting area to stay and chat. Twenty-three curiously decorated rooms
line two hallways in this second-floor hotel. The rooms are stark, but
clean--as if trying to make an artistic statement in minimalism
Pioneer Square Hotel
77 Yesler Wy
Seattle, WA 98104
Phone: (206) 340-1234
Fax: (206) 467-0707
Built at the end of the 19th century, this brick landmark in the Pioneer
Square historic district features small rooms that are exceptionally well-furnished
in period styles. Call it cozy: You'll see lots of dark wood and rich,
royal-red fabric. Floral drapes lighten the mood a bit and, unlike some
far more modern properties, each room has ample lighting. The bathrooms
are compact, but have tubs big enough for real people to relax.
Luxury Hotels;
Four Seasons Olympic Hotel
411 University St
Seattle, WA 98101
Phone: (206) 621-1700
Fax: (206) 682-9633
Price: $285/night and up
Neither opulent nor flashy, the Four Seasons is hands-down elegant. Built
in 1924 as the Olympic, the sturdy brick/stone structure is theoretically
Italian Renaissance. Periodic renovations have kept the decor posh and
the brass gleaming. The service is matchless, from managerial staff on
down to housekeeping.
The Sorrento Hotel
900 Madison St
Seattle, WA 98104
Phone: (206) 622-6400
Fax: (206) 343-6155
The interior ambience is clubby, with lots of dark wood paneling, a fireside
library and lounge, and tastefully furnished guest rooms whose sleek atmosphere
has as many Asian hints as Italian. The Hunt Club, the hotel's restaurant,
is a brick and mahogany enclave where many star chefs have earned their
reps.
Alexis Hotel
1007 1st Ave
Seattle, WA 98101
Phone: (206) 624-4844
Price: $175-$675
The Alexis, like the Four Seasons, is much more than outward appearances
suggest. Occupying most of its block on First Avenue, its only street-front
manifestations are two compact lobbies on First Avenue and Madison Street.
Step inside and you enter a friendly, low-key world reminiscent of small-to-medium
European hotels, with cheery colors and stucco walls. Rooms are large,
discreetly furnished and very quiet. The service is exceptionally accommodating.
