Phase 1 (February 1998 - February 1999):

The first phase of this project is an effort to develop a foundation upon which future research and recommendations can be based. There are three major tasks involved in Phase 1: information gathering, preliminary field evaluation of the system, and initial summarization of the current state of knowledge. These will be performed between February 1998 and February 1999 (see timetable) and should serve as the basis for ensuing research efforts and management policy development.

Task 1: Identify the documented and hypothesized impacts of ferry docks on juvenile salmon

1.1. Initial "concept" workshop

1.2. Synthesis of knowledge pertaining to focus issues

1.3. Results and research planning workshop

Task 2: Compile, evaluate, and summarize evidence for potential impacts

2.1. Determine sensitivity of migrating salmon stocks at terminal locations

2.2. Preliminary evaluation of dock environments

2.3. Develop Phase 2 research plan

Task 3: Recommend research foci to resolve outstanding questions regarding impacts

3.1. Compile comprehensive database

3.2. Prepare intial summary data

3.3. Prepare reports and workshop procedings
