Quinn, T.P. and C. Groot. 1984. The
effect of water flow rate on bimodal orientation of juvenile chum salmon,
Oncorhynchus keta. Animal Behavior 32:628-629.
Region: PNW
Species: Chum
Study Objective: Explore the role experimental techniques play in
generating bimodal orientation behavior.
Results: Chum fry, previous found to have unimodal compass orientation,
demonstrated bimodal orientation in tests in a circular tank under varying
flow rates. Unimodal orientation was demonstrated in high flow experiments
and bimodal orientation was demonstrated in instances of reduced flow. Care
must be taken to properly interpret the possible reasons behind demonstrations
of bimodal orientation under different flow rates.
