Abstract:

The Red-winged Wood-rail was originally described by Sclater and Salvin in 1878 from Sarayacu, Ecuador. Since then we have found its range to be mysteriously patchy, with populations in the eastern Ecuadorian foothills as well as the Peruvian and Brazilian lowlands. To this date it remains an enigmatic and poorly known species whose vocalization is yet to be confirmed. Only a single nest of this species has been described, and little else is known of its habits and natural history. The single nest was a leafy shallow cup suspended a meter off the ground between the root masses of two stilt-root palms in the foothills of northeastern Ecuador. Clutch size was 3.
