Abstract:

The Sickle-winged Guan is distributed along both slopes of the Andes in Ecuador from elevations of 900 to 2600 m. Some authors consider the two Ecuadorian subspecies, fagani in the west and tschudii in the east, to be separate species. Nests of each of these two subspecies have recently been described from Ecuador. Slight behavioral differences at nests have been noted, but low sample sizes prevent any strong generalizations. The nest found in the east was an oblong cup built of vines, bamboo leaves and leaf petioles. The nest found in the west was a shallow depression, outlined with a few sticks, on top of an epiphytic clump of bromeliads. Clutch size at both nests was 2.
