Abstract:

This enigmatic and shy species is very poorly known, both in terms of its distribution and its ecology. It is found in humid montane forests from Mexico to Bolivia, but reports of its occurrence are very patchy. This is due mostly to its nomidic nature, following seeding patches of Chusquea bamboo. It presumably breeds when seeding resources correspond to appropriate ecological conditions, but to date, there is only one reported nest for this species. The nest was a shallow saucer, relatively substancial by columbid standards, placed a few meters above the ground in a dense tangle of bamboo and vines. It was active in southern Ecuador at an elevation of 2600m during a period of extensive bamboo seeding, and at least 8 other males were calling in the immediate vicinity, suggesting there were several pairs reproducing at the time.
