About the YYNHRG.......................

The Yanayacu Natural History Research Group (YYNHRG) is a collection of field biologists focused on describing quantitative, basic natural history (the intricacies of the lives of plants and animals in their natural environments) of poorly known species. Together, we represent a wide range of backgrounds and interests, but share the same basic philosophy that natural history is a fundamentally important component of biodiversity that deserves broad recognition and attention.

Our goal is to describe the natural histories of little-known tropical species in a rigorous and quantitative fashion, and thus contribute to a deeper understanding of tropical ecology, evolutionary biology, and the diversity of organisms that share our planet.

Many, but not all, of us are currently carrying out studies at the Yanayacu Biological Station in eastern Ecuador. Yanayacu is located next to the well known birding paradise of Cabanas San Isidro, a mecca for many birdwatchers. San Isidro allows us to utilize their beautifully preserved forest to carry out most of our studies in the area. Many also work in other areas of Ecuador and the Neotropics. The YYNHRG was formed in 2002 and currently includes several research associates and active members.

Many of our members are currently collaborating on a broad array of projects that are based on strong natural history observations and that bring together our diverse backgrounds to strenghten each project and to continue our own educations. Follow links below in the red boxes for more about some of our larger projects.
