CONFERENCE STRANDS

The conference theme, In Praise of Education: The New Three Rs Reflection, Responsibility, Renewal, and the strands described below reflect an effort to consider the work of the NNER from its inception 22 years ago to the vision that will take the NNER into the middle of the 21st century. The conference will provide opportunities for focused interaction around these strands. We have selected these strands to celebrate the continuity of the NNER and our commitment to renewing these principles in our community, school, and university partnerships. The four guiding principles of the NNER constitute the strands as listed below.

1)     Pursuing Excellence and Equity for all Learners

Assuring high quality educational outcomes (academic and civic) for all students, specifically addressing those students who have been traditionally underserved in public schooling.

2)     Preparing Students for Participation in Democracy

Addressing the teaching of civic virtues and behaviors to youth with an eye toward preparing citizens who have the desire and skills to advance American democratic ideals and close the gap between the American promise and the current reality.

3)     Practicing Nurturing Pedagogies

Fostering practices that use a nurturing pedagogy, resulting in high educational outcomes for all students while modeling an ethic of care.

4)     Stewarding Public Education

Supporting practices that address the ideals of high quality educational outcomes, civic education, and nurturing pedagogy for all students and that concurrently advance the public’s appreciation of the institution of public schooling.
