I incorporate community service into the curriculum of my upper-level biology courses at FHL. Working with FHL’s K-12 Science Outreach Program and the San Juan Island School District, we develop unique service learning modules for each class. These activities are extremely popular with all participants; teachers appreciate the added expert help, young students make connections with college-age students, and the UW FHL students reinforce their own learning experience by teaching marine biodiversity to others. My Marine Botany course (spring quarter, 2006-2009) helped sixth graders at Friday Harbor Middle School in their study of the diversity of local marine invertebrates and plants, leading them on two field trips. My Marine Biology course (autumn 2009-12) helped first graders at Friday Harbor Elementary School.
Lab members are also active in mentoring high school students in marine science. Several students have worked in our laboratory as summer interns (see our people page). We also provide support to teams entering regional science competitions, like the ORCA BOWL (National Ocean Sciences Bowl) and the FIRST MATE ROV competition.
