As of October 2006, there were 732 cumulative HIV/AIDS cases reported, with 434 people currently living with HIV/AIDS. Overall, males account for nearly 87% of reported cases in Montana. However, during 2001-2006, that percentage dropped to 81%, indicating that women represent an increasing proportion of newly diagnosed cases. Whites account for nearly 86% of all HIV/AIDS in Montana; that percentage has remained fairly consistent in recent years.
Nearly 57% of Montana’s reported cases have occurred in three counties – Yellowstone, Missoula, and Cascade, which are home to the state’s three largest cities (Billings, Missoula, and Great Falls). Through 2003, sixteen of Montana’s fifty-six counties had yet to report a single case of HIV/AIDS.
