Accomplishments
The Northwest Center for Philosophy for Children was founded in 1996 in the Seattle, Washington area. The organization's primary purpose is to introduce philosophy into the lives of young people. The center is an independent, not-for-profit organization, funded primarily by grants, tax-deductible donations, and workshop fees.
Our principal activities are the "Philosophers in the Schools" program, which brings philosophers into K-12 classrooms and homeschooling groups to facilitate philosophy classes with young people, our teacher-education workshops, and our parent-education project. We have an eight-member Board of Directors.
Since its formation, the organization's accomplishments include:
- Establishing a "Philosophers in the Schools" program, in which philosophers conduct weekly philosophy classes in schools around the Seattle area. Over the past four years we have brought philosophy classes into 16 different schools in the Seattle area.
- Developing a partnership with the University of Washington to train university students to volunteer in the "Philosophers in the Schools" program.
- Conducting workshops for teachers and administrators around Washington State about bringing philosophy into classrooms.
- Initiating a parent-education project, involving parent workshops about ways to facilitate philosophical discussions with children.
- Selection by Leadership Tomorrow, a Seattle leadership training organization, as one of its projects, in which community volunteers created promotional materials for our organization.
