Geriatric Education Centers:

The Health Resources and Services Administration has established a grant program designed to strengthen interdisciplinary training of health professionals in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease and other health concerns of older adults. Functioning within a defined geographic area, a Geriatric Education Center (GEC) provides services to and fosters collaborative relationships among members of the health professions educational community. This educational community includes organizations or institutions (both affiliated and unaffiliated with the GEC or its parent organization) which sponsor formal and informal educational programs and activities for faculty, students, and practitioners in health care. The geographic area may be a State, or a portion of a State such as counties or a metropolitan area, or several States or portions thereof which the Center can expect to serve.

Objectives of the GECs are to:

  • improve the training of health professionals in geriatrics, including geriatric residencies, traineeships, or fellowships;
  • develop and disseminate curricula relating to the treatment of the health problems of elderly individuals;
  • support training and retraining of faculty to provide instruction in geriatrics; support continuing education of health professionals who provide geriatric care;
  • provide students with clinical training in geriatrics in nursing homes, chronic and acute disease hospitals, ambulatory care centers, and senior centers.

The National Association of GECs (NAGEC) web site lists the names, addresses and telephone numbers of all GECs and has linkages to individual GEC web sites. The NAGEC address is: http://www.hcoa.org/nagec.htm
