Distance Learning Program In Geriatric Health Promotion

To address the need for health professionals to keep abreast of the latest information in the field of aging, the Northwest GEC has established a 40-hour Distance Learning Program. The program utilizes the extensive series of self-study guides, Northwest GEC’s Curriculum Module Series, developed over the last seven years. Written by geriatric healthcare professionals, recognized experts in their respective fields, the materials cover a range of topics related to improving health outcomes for older adults by establishing health promotion interventions to prevent disease and postpone further disability. Many modules cover a specific age-related physical or mental health condition that can be prevented, postponed or alleviated by a health promotion intervention, e.g., diabetes mellitus, osteoporosis, depression and stroke. Other modules cover broader topic areas such as how to establish health promotion programs in urban or rural communities, preventing falls, and aging families. Several modules have been modified to reflect issues and health concerns of ethnic older adults and those with developmental disabilities, e.g., nutrition, depression, osteoporosis. New topics continue to be added to the series.  N.B.  You are welcome to review and download any and all curriculum modules even if you choose not to participate in the Distance Learning Program.

After enrolling in the program, Distance Learning participants can select themes or topics related to their professional needs and interests and download the specific Curriculum Modules.  Over the course of a year, participants are expected to select ten modules and submit their answers to the self-study questions provided. Answer sheets will be reviewed by Northwest GEC faculty. Upon completing the 40-hour Distance Learning Program, participants will receive a Geriatric Health Promotion certificate from the Northwest GEC.

CONTINUING EDUCATION CREDIT IS AVAILABLE TO DISTANCE LEARNING PROGRAM PARTICIPANTS.  Earn 4.8 hours of CE credit for each curriculum module completed in the NWGEC Distance Learning Program.  CE credits apply to nurses, social workers, psychologists and counselors.  Earn up to 150 hours of CE credit in Geriatric Health Promotion at home and at your own pace.  CE registration information provided upon registration for the NWGEC's Distance Learning Program in Geriatric Health Promotion.
