Natasha Grossman, MSW
Walk a Mile: Program Manager

Natasha Grossman is a 1994 MSW graduate of the University of Washington. She currently works for the Northwest Institute for Children and Families. Natasha's experience includes a history of working with vulnerable populations through direct service and policy advocacy.

The vision of the Walk a Mile project started with a question: Natasha wondered what would be possible if policy makers had first-hand knowledge of the people affected by their policy-making. Her vision was to create an opportunity to bring policymakers and their low-income constituents together to get to know one another as human beings. With the advent of welfare reform, Walk A Mile was designed specifically to be an opportunity for policymakers to understand the issues of people receiving AFDC and for welfare recipients to gain insight into the policy making process.

The project has now been implemented in 25 states, including adaptations for participants in English for Speakers of Other Language programs. While the intent of the project is primarily educational, several policy makers have indicated their intention to shape policy differently as a result of their experience. Equally exciting, more than one welfare recipient has registered to vote for the first time ever.
