Summary:
"Trail to the Tribe" Quality Improvement Demonstration Project
The
Nooksack Indian Tribe Youth and Family Services has developed
a three year program to improve long term outcomes for
Child Protective Services interventions within the tribe.
This will be funded by Frontlines Quality Improvement Center
with grant #90-CA 1700/02 from the Children's Bureau ACYF,
U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
The project focuses on families
with children in or at risk to be placed in foster care
because of neglect and/or
abuse. While specific services offered
in the program are similar to those traditionally provided by CPS, the Nooksack
Program focuses on positive, non-threatening reuniting of families within the
context of tribal support. This is distinctly a Native American approach with
services provided by Native Americans to Native Americans with tribal and extended
family interactions. It is a "step" program moving from "in
home" support visits, through provided personal transportation to meetings
and services, to finally client responsibility to utilize provided transportation
to access the services and meetings. The centerpiece for providing core services
is the program. This supports most of the following services:
- Parenting classes
- Basic life skills support
- Family skills training for parents and children
- Anger management sessions for adults and children
- Counseling for parents and children
- Counseling for at-risk children identified in the schools by behavior
problems.
