Risk Factors for Heart Disease

This interactive list will help you identify your own risk factors for heart disease and a goal for your LDL-cholesterol.

Mark the risk factors that apply to you, then check the table at the bottom for your LDL-cholesterol goal.

Risk Factors (count 1 for each that applies):
Male at least 45 years old
Female and any one of the following:

Age 55 or older

Reached menopause and not taking estrogen replacement therapy

Ovaries have been removed and not taking estrogen replacement therapy

A parent or sibling has had early heart disease (under 55 if male, under 65 if female)
Smoker, or live or work with someone who smokes
High blood presuure
Low "good" HDL-cholesterol (less than 35)
Healthy Factor (subtract 1):
 "Good" HDL-cholesterol is higher than 60
Special Risk Factors
Have had a heart attack, bypass surgery, or angioplasty
Have diabetes

Less than 2 risk factors and no coronary heart disease below 160

2 or more risk factors and no coronary heart disease below 130
