Treatments for Lipid DisordersThere are three type of treatments for lipid disorders:
DietModifying your high-fat diet to one that emphasizes low-fat foods can lower plasma LDL enough to significantly reduce the risk of coronary heart disease. For most people, working to modify your diet is the first step in treating high cholesterol. The National Cholesterol Education Program has developed 2 sets of dietary goals: the Step I and Step II diets. Both diets recommend eating a variety of foods which, on balance, are lower in fat than the typical American diet. The Step I diet is recommended for anyone in good health aged 2 or more. The Step II diet is recommended for anyone who has already acheived the Step I diet, has very high cholesterol, or has heart disease.
Try our short questionnaire, the Fat Intake Scale, to help you determine if your diet is high in fat. ExerciseResearch has shown that aerobic exercise can raise your HDL cholesterol (the good cholesterol). MORE ON EXERCISE MedicationIf diet therapy doesn't help or is expected to be insufficient for your condition a variety of medications can be used. Different categories of medications can be used to lower LDL, lower triglycerides, and/or raise HDL The NW Lipid research Clinic also participates in clinical research on medications not normally available to most clinics. Please check our general guidelines to see if you would be interested in participating in one of our research studies. For details on specific medications, see:
