Established in 1948, the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology has a faculty of 33 physicians, five PhD investigators, six fellows, and five certified nurse-midwives, with 24 residents in training.
David A Eschenbach, MD, serves as the department's Chairman. Of the 16 faculty members for whom subspecialty certification is available, 13 are board certified in their subspecialty and three are active candidates. All our faculty are board certified in Ob/Gyn except four who are active candidates.

The Education Division has responsibility for coordinating student and resident training in obstetrics and gynecology, including development, implementation and consistent application of curriculum objectives which follow the guidelines set by the Association of Professors of Gynecology and Obstetrics (APGO), the Undergraduate Medical Education Committee (UMEC), the Council on Resident Education in Obstetrics and Gynecology (CREOG) and the Residency Review Committee (RRC).
The Education Division also coordinates faculty development programs, Grand Rounds, and assumes an active role in continuing medical education (CME) activities.

Gynecologic Oncology

Our Division strives to provide the best comprehensive gynecologic oncology care available to patients with gynecologic cancers. The Gynecologic Oncology division is comprised of six gynecologic oncologists, all of whom are subspecialty certified, one general gynecologist board certified in Ob/Gyn, and one PhD nurse practitioner, constituting one of the largest single group of gynecologic oncologists in the Pacific Northwest. In addition, the division has four Fellows in subspecialty training.
In 2007, over 725 new reproductive tract cancer patients were seen in the Gynecologic Oncology Clinic at the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance Southeast Lake Union facility, an alliance of UWMC, Children’s Hospital & Regional Medical Center, and the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. Over 475 major surgical cases and 155 minor surgeries were performed, plus approximately 1277 cycles of chemotherapy administered. The service continues to grow.

The Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine provides quality patient care, conducts extensive medical education, and performs clinical and basic research. It is composed of eight faculty members (seven of whom are subspecialty certified in Maternal-Fetal Medicine and one an active candidate), five Fellows in subspecialty training, a PhD diabetes clinical nurse specialist, five certified nurse midwives, and four genetic counselors.

The 8 MDs practicing at the UWMC provide primary care for women, including their basic medical problems, pregnancy, family planning, gynecologic and breast care, as well as psychological, social and sexual health care. We also provide specialty care for a wide range of problems, including pelvic relaxation, infectious diseases, abnormal uterine bleeding, endometriosis, benign cervical, ovarian and uterine tumors, premenstrual syndrome, pelvic pain, menopausal symptoms and osteoporosis.
In addition, physicians at the University of Washington and throughout the Pacific Northwest refer patients to our Division for the diagnosis and treatment of chronic pelvic pain and difficult infections.

Harborview Medical Center Women’s Clinic offers a wide range of obstetric, gynecologic and primary care services, with active inpatient and outpatient gynecologic surgical services. Seven University of Washington attending obstetrician/gynecologists are based at HMC.
Harborview is the site of the Northwest regional trauma and burn centers, the Sexual Assault Center, and is also the county hospital for King County, serving all women, regardless of socioeconomic status or ethnicity.
at VA Puget Sound and American Lake Women's Health Clinics
Women's Clinics at VA Puget Sound in Seattle and Americake in Tacoma provide primary care as well as gynecology specialty care to women veterans from throughout the Northwest. We serve a rapidly expanding population of women veterans with needs ranging from contraception services to menopausal management, including outpatient and inpatient services and gynecologic surgery.
