Depression in Obstetrics and Gynecology: Epidemiology and Health Services Interventions (K23)
Jennifer Melville, MD, MPH
Women have twofold higher prevalence rates of depressive disorders, which are frequently comorbid with gynecologic disorders such as urinary incontinence and chronic pelvic pain. Obstetrician-gynecologists have exceptional access to women during their reproductive years. They therefore have a unique, but unrealized, opportunity to detect and initiate treatment or referral for depression in women from their late teens through the menopause.
The goal of this 5-year Mentored Patient Oriented Research Career Development Award is to enable the applicant to obtain the necessary skills and training to become an independent investigator in improving women's mental health by focusing on the role of depression in obstetric and gynecologic conditions and in improving detection and treatment of depression in the OB-GYN clinical setting.
