Introduction
Rock Springs is the largest town in southwestern Wyoming. The medical service population is 50,000. Memorial Hospital is the only hospital in the county. Being in a rural setting with a mid-sized population and yet a referral and service center for almost a quarter of the state provides an excellent opportunity to obtain many skills in Obstetrics and Gynecology. Your preceptors are the only group that provides obstetric services in the area. Rock Springs is on Interstate 80 and is easily accessible by car. The Rock Springs airport is about 10 miles from town. There are between 2-6 commercial flights daily connecting to Denver International Airport.
College Hill Women’s Health Center
This is the base for your clerkship. It is where three board-certified obstetrician/gynecologists see their clinic patients and have their offices. The clinic is one mile from the hospital. You will work with both Dr. Peter Allyn and Dr. Daryl Kaan. The office phone number is (307) 362-1861. The office address is 3000 College Drive, Suite A, Rock Springs, Wyoming, 82901. The office is located off exit 103 on Interstate 80.
Check In
At least two weeks prior to your rotation, call to advise of your arrival time so we can orient you to student housing and let you know things you will need for the clerkship. On the first day of your rotation, report to the reception desk at the clinic.
Transportation
You will need a car in Rock Springs. In the winter your car will need antifreeze rated to at least 20F.
Medical Experience
You will rotate between several areas during your clerkship. These will include the outpatient clinic, labor and delivery, operating suites, medical-surgery inpatient areas. There are many other opportunities available, depending on your interests (laboratory, emergency department, family planning, etc.)
Housing
Located only a few blocks from both the hospital and clinic, housing is currently a two-bedroom, one-bath split-level townhouse, (intended for the students only). It is fully furnished with TV, microwave, dishwasher, washer/dryer, iron & ironing board, telephone and wireless internet. Free parking is available.
Night Call
No set call schedule exists. The student is expected to spend several nights during the rotation following patients in labor, and for delivery. A call room is provided next door to the delivery suite. The more patients the students follow in labor, the more deliveries the student will perform.
Dress Code
Tie and/or white coat required; please don't come to hospital in scrubs. |
