Welcome!
The University of Washington School of Medicine offers a basic six-week clerkship in Obstetrics and Gynecology in Spokane, Washington.
During the next six weeks you will be experiencing a variety of opportunities within the Ob/Gyn field. In this short amount of time we can only hope to cover the basics and still have some time to cover a few topics in depth which are of particular interest to you.
The quality of your experience here depends upon how much of yourself you devote to the program and to frequent, candid communication between you and the preceptors. The continued success of the Clerkship depends upon new ideas from you and our ability to accomplish mutual goals.
The following is a basic outline of the types of opportunities you will have a chance to explore here:
Before Arrival in Spokane
Bringing someone with you for housing requires special consideration. Call (509-474-4966) or email Nancy Granlund, the program administrator, at least 6-8 weeks before coming to Spokane to check on available space.
Upon Arrival in Spokane
When you arrive in Spokane, go to the Sacred Heart Medical Center Main Tower front Information desk (staffed until 6:00 pm), and you will be directed to the Admitting office, where you can pick up your key and supply packet.
Between 6:00 and 9:00 pm, go directly to the Admitting office - follow the hallway to the left of the front Information desk and turn right at the hallway near the Gift Shop. The Admitting office is the first door on your left.
After 9:00 pm, enter through the Emergency Room entrance. Admitting is located in the Main Tower, Main floor across from the north entrance of the Gift Shop.
If you arrive after 11:30 pm, when this office closes, call (509) 474-3115 and someone will come and unlock the door for you to get your supply packet. If using an in-house phone, call the # on the door.
Hospital Experience
Students at this Ob WWAMI site will spend time at Sacred Heart Medical Center during the day and night shifts, and attend an OB Clinic. Some students will be taking night call with their attendings at Valley Hospital, Deaconess Medical Center or Holy Family hospital. The requirements of the students will include hospital and office patient workups, a formal presentation, assigned reading materials, and specific time set aside for one-to-one faculty-student interaction.
Students will receive a course introduction at the Spokane site and their final written at either the University of Washington or in Spokane, based on student preference. Student evaluation will include:
- rating of ward and office performance, including evaluation of 4 written workups and an oral presentation
- written final exam
Please refer to the Student Evaluation section of the website for specifics on the Final Grade determination. The students are also provided with a form at the UW by which they may evaluate their experiences and instruction at the Spokane site.

Night Call
Your preceptor will determine your night call schedule while you are working in the office. You will report directly to your preceptor and work with him/her. During your Sacred Heart Medical Center rotation you will report directly to the OB fellow. You will have scheduled nights on call. Expect to work some Saturdays and Sundays which consist of a 24-hour call.

At the beginning of the clerkship you will be given a notebook with various handouts and suggested reading assignments. The WWAMI office has various textbooks available for your use during your clerkship. These books remain in Spokane at the end of your clerkship.
