Clerkship/Site Description

The Ob/Gyn clinical clerkship in Boise, Idaho has been in place since the early 1970’s and is currently centered at St. Luke’s Regional Medical Center in downtown Boise. The Boise area continues to grow very rapidly and includes other communities such as Meridian, Eagle, Nampa, and Caldwell. It is a diverse location with many wonderful amenities including sporting, cultural, and educational activities.

Great opportunities exist in Boise for a well-rounded exposure to general OB/GYN care. Our goal is to help expose you to as many opportunities as possible to see and experience first-hand the clinical practice of the OB/GYN specialty.

Hospital Facilities

The Boise area has four private hospitals and a Veterans Administrations facility. Nampa and Caldwell each have one private hospital. St. Luke’s Regional Medical Center is the largest facility with all major specialties including one of the busiest OB/GYN care facilities in the northwest. A large, new, state-of-the-art NICU opened in 2001. St. Luke’s employs the largest Maternal-Fetal-Medicine specialists in the state. St. Luke’s Meridian Hospital opened in November 2001 and is located just off the freeway.

St. Alphonsus Regional Medical Center operates under the sponsorship of the Sisters of the Holy Cross. Specialty areas include, dialysis, orthopedics, neurosurgery, trauma, and short-term mental health crisis care. Gynecological surgery is performed as well, but on a smaller scale. While smaller, the L&D unit is expanding with a new women’s center and a growing NICU.

The Boise VA Hospital serves as a frequent site of rotations for medical students and family practice residents. In addition to full-time staffing, many physicians in private practice are employed as consultants. Currently, two OB/GYN physicians work as consultants. The VA employs one part-time GYN nurse practitioner.

Clinical Training

Each student will spend 6 weeks in their OB/GYN clerkship in Boise. As our goal is to provide as broad exposure as possible, daily activities will vary between general and specialist offices, labor and delivery, the operating room, and the VA. Lectures will frequently be coordinated with the family practice residency program. Students will frequently work with the residents when assigned to labor & delivery

Housing

Housing questions can arranged through the Boise WWAMI Office.

Transportation

We highly recommend students to drive their own cars to Boise due to the multiple locations of offices throughout the Treasure Valley.
