Site Description

Tacoma Women's Specialists is a single specialty private practice Ob/Gyn group practicing in North Tacoma across the street from Tacoma General Hospital, a level III regional Perinatal center. Our office has four physicians, two nurse practitioners, and a staff of fifteen nurses and other employees. We are open from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday. Our physicians usually spend two half-days each week in the operating room and the rest of the time in the office seeing patients. Each provider has one day off a week. Our call schedule is usually every fourth night and fourth weekend. We share call with other community Ob/Gyn's who work with us at Tacoma General Hospital. We only do obstetrics at Tacoma general, however we do surgery at both hospitals. Our office sees a large volume of primary care and referral Ob/Gyn patients. We manage virtually all areas specific to women's health including infertility and oncology. We have in-office ultrasound, urodynamics, colposcopy, and other treatment capabilities. During your rotation, you will be spending most of your time with Dr. Lenihan. However, you will also be working with many of the other physicians listed above when Dr Lenihan is not available or while you are on call. We would expect you to be available for call approximately once a week.

You will need to provide your own lab coat, name badge and other personal supplies such as stethoscope, PDA, etc. You will also need to have all of the books and study materials required by the medical school. There is a University of Washington Book Store here in Tacoma if you still need to get some materials after you arrive. Our dress code is business professional with shirts and ties for the gentlemen and blouses and skirts or slacks for the ladies. Jeans, knit shirts, and other casual clothes are not appropriate for this rotation. Scrubs are usually worn only in the hospital.

Final Exams & Grades

The final written Exam is given at the University of Washington Medical Center on the last day of the clerkship. Exam results are combined with the results of ward and clinic performance evaluations, workups, and oral topic presentations to determine the final grade. Preceptors are expected to evaluate students assigned to their services.

On or before the last day, students are required to complete a thoughtful and honest teaching assessment and overall clerkship evaluation. Rental textbooks must be returned to the Division of Education office before the end of the last clerkship day.

Final Comments

Preparation, interest, enthusiasm, and availability will maximize your opportunity to have one-on-one interaction with faculty and staff, to develop problem-solving techniques, and to participate in hands-on activities in the wards, clinics, and operating suites. A regular reading program throughout the clerkship will enhance your overall experience and performance in the final exams.

We hope your Ob/Gyn Basic Clerkship rotation at the Tacoma Women's Specialists site will be an enjoyable and challenging learning experience. Please feel free to contact your Site Clerkship Director (Dr. Lenihan) or the Ob/Gyn Division of Education office at the University (206-543-3891) any time during the rotation if you have additional questions or perceive a problem. We look forward to having you work and learn with us during your Ob/Gyn clerkship.
