Suggestions from the Clerkship Director
If you are interested in the UW Ob/Gyn residency program, I encourage an early 4th year elective within our department. If however, you know that you don't want to or cannot for any reason match at the university, I encourage 4th year electives at away hospitals. This gives you the opportunity to evaluate the site, faculty, and residents while giving them a chance to get to know you.
I also encourage you to meet with your faculty mentor or with me, prior to deciding on electives. The end of your 3rd year is an excellent time to review your credentials to date and for us to make reasonable recommendations regarding your residency options.
Interviewing Information
We are very excited that you are interested in pursuing a career in Obstetrics and Gynecology. The University of Washington Department of OB/GYN wishes to extend courtesy to all UW medical students and offer the opportunity to interview for a UW OB/GYN residency position. We strongly encourage you to meet with your OB/GYN faculty mentor, Dr. Thomas Benedetti, or Dr. Vicki Mendiratta to assess your application, interview strategy, and long term goals.
The two courtesy interview dates are Wednesday October 28, 2009 and Monday December 16, 2009. Please contact Elizabeth Jarrett to schedule.
If you cannot interview on one of those days, you must enter the formal application process through ERAS. Once we receive all completed packets for all students applying to our residency, we will offer interview opportunities on a competitive basis.
Although the University of Washington Department of OB/GYN will continue to evaluate applications as they are submitted, in a "rolling fashion", please try to submit your application through ERAS on opening day, September 1, 2009.
For 4th year Visiting Medical Students who come for an "away" elective rotation in our department, you will need to go through the formal application process through ERAS and will be considered for an interview during the regular interview season, again, on a competitive basis.
As interview season approaches, we are pleased to offer an informal session on "Interviewing Pearls". This will lead by faculty and residents on Tuesday August 11, 2009 from 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm. Stay tuned for an invitation.
The Association of Professors of Gynecology and Obstetrics (APGO) developed a useful guide for students interested in a career in the field. Comprehensive Women's Health Care: A Career in Obstetrics and Gynecology may be downloaded from APGO's website.
