Saint Alphonsus Obstetrics and Gynecology-OB GYN 639
During your six week rotation at Saint Alphonsus, you will be splitting your time between Saint Alphonsus Obstetrics and Gynecology and Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center. In this clerkship we hope to offer students a wide variety of experiences in obstetrics and gynecology.
Office and OR Experience
Students should expect to spend three days per week in the office and OR with one or two MD's during the 6 week rotation. In the office, students will interview patients alone and then examine patients with the attending present. In the OR students will be able to scrub in to all surgeries and assist to their abilities. In a rotation students should be able to see hysteroscopy, laparoscopy, vaginal surgery, and robotic surgery. Additionally, students will accompany the MD to the ER for any visits that he/she needs to attend.
When clinic and L&D are quiet students may benefit from spending a half day at the office of Dr. Renee Bobrowski looking at ultrasounds and discussing high risk obstetrics.
The very motivated student may be able to be exposed to other opportunities when there are not other OB/GYN duties. This might include spending time with the OB anesthetist, visiting pathology to look at placentas, and possibly even Gyn-Onc surgical cases.
The first few days of the rotation will be spent on L&D with the Laborists and do delivery simulation so students will feel comfortable with the basic process and have an introduction to whta complications may occur.
Two days per week will be spent on L&D with the Laborists assisting with triage and morning rounds.
Call and Pager Information
Students will spend one week night per week and one weekend per month on call. Students will be expected to meet al patients admitted for labor and will follow their progress and attend their deliveries. On call weekends and during times that are otherwise quiet, students will be able to do delivery simulations with "Noelle."
Pagers are not required for this rotation; however, students are expected to use their cell phones as they would a pager.
Students will be expected to attend weekly Grand Rounds, monthly OB "M&M" meetings, daily morning rounds that include the Laborist, Pharmacist, RN's and social work discuss and do teaching about each admitted patient on L&D.
