The University of Washington School of Medicine offers a basic six-week clerkship in Obstetrics and Gynecology in Spokane, Washington.
Before Arrival in Spokane
Upon Arrival in Spokane
You may check into your apartment after 7pm Saturday during the weekend prior to your first clerkship day. When you arrive in Spokane, go to Sacred Heart Medical Center Emergency Room Entrance. On your right will be teh Security Officer's room where you will give them your name and ask for your "key envelope" that has your name on it. Your key envelope will be available for pickup anytime Saturday prior to your first day of clerkship. Your key envelope contains all pertinent information and regulations you need for your stay. If you lose any items from your key envelope you will be charged $10 per item.
Your apartment will not be available for entry until 7pm Saturday.
Meet Nancy at 7:45am on first day of clerkship inside front entrance to Sacred Heart Medical Center-Main Tower. We will begin your course introduction and you will be given a notebook with various materials for use during your rotation.
During your six week rotation you will spend approximately 2 weeks on L&D during day/night shifts and one weekend on call at Sacred Heart Medical Center or Holy Family Hospital, a day in the Ob Clinic and 2 days with Gyn Oncology Surgeons in clinic/surgery. Also four weeks with your preceptors to include clinic, surgery and hospital deliveries.
Seattle Reproductive Medicine (SRM) Spokane
Part of your rotation may include time spent at Seattle Reproductive Medicine in Spokane. The experience at SRM Spokane is designed to expose the OB/GYN medical student to the field of Reproductive Endocrinology & Infertility. The student will be involved in New Patient visits and Follow-up visits, as well as the procedure of pelvic ultrasonography. Due to the limitations of the rotation, variable experiences with sonographic egg retrieval, embryo transfer, intrauterine insemination, hysterosalpingography and sonohysterography will also occur. Case studies will be used to enhance learning.
Wednesday is set aside as a day for lectures and study time. There will be early morning lectures at the Ob/Gyn WWAMI office as scheduled. It is also a time you can do personal errands during regular business hours.
Call & Pagers
Your preceptor and you will determine your one night per week night call while you are working in their office. You will report directly to your preceptor and work with him/her. If the call night is slow and you do not stay in the hospital, you can take call again later in the week. Students are expected to stay in house overnight on L&D at least once during their rotation as part of your L&D experience. During your Sacred Heart Medical Center rotation you will report directly to the OB fellow.
The Ob/Gyn WWAMI office has all required reading textbooks available for your use during your clerkship. There are various other textbooks available for checkout also. These books remain in Spokane at the end of your clerkship.
You will be required to given an in-depth oral presentation on a topic of your choice. An outline and bibliography are required and copies are given to all those attending your lecture. This report gives you a chance to explore at least one area of Ob/Gyn more completely.
Study Room & Computer
Sacred Heart Medical Center Health Sciences Library and the Ob WWAMI office are available for studying and have computers for your use where email can be achieved.
There are two-bedroom apartments with 1 1/2 baths (tub/shower in one bedroom only), living/dining room and kitchen. On site are: coin operated washer/dryer ($3.50+), tennis court, seasonal swimming pool, hot tub, and workout room located near the Office. Shopping areas are close. The area surrounding the apartments is nice for biking and running. The apartment provisions are: air conditioning, basic furniture, microwave, coffeemaker, dishes, silverware, pots and pans, utensils, kitchen linens and TV. Students are expected to do their laundry and leave the apartment and kitchen items when they are finished at the Spokane site. Apartments have calbe internet and wireless internet for your WiFi. Password to use system is on the plastic box holding router. You can use any UWSOM signal which is incrypted. (No cable hookup in apartments. If you wish to have cable, you call Comcast and pay directly to them. We do not authorize any connect to cable). Pets are not allowed in the apartments.
Note: you need to bring all bedding for double beds (to include sheets, blankets, pillows), alarm clock, personal soaps, dishwasher & laundry soaps & cleaners, toilet paper etc.
Meals and Parking
A free meal pass is furnished by Sacred Heart Medical Center for the duration of your clerkship (families not included). There is free parking space available in the hospital employee lots and all area preceptors clinics.
Having a car is necessary. The apartments are 2.8 miles away from Sacred Heart. Preceptors offices are in various locations in the city. In the winter, air travel out of Spokane is often delayed by fog. All-weather tires are recommended for driving in ice and snow conditions.
Some personal items listed under Housing. You will need to bring a white lab coat or two for the offices and hospital, and a name tag to be worn at all times. Sacred Heart Medical Center will issue you a photo ID Security Badge to be worn at Sacred Heart Medical Center and Holy Family Hospital. ($10.00 charge if Security card is lost). It is also recommended that you bring a pair of comfortable shoes to work in when you are on Labor & Delivery at the hospital.
