Research Assistant Professor

Joined UW Medicine:

Education:

• 9/1997-12/2001 BS, Biochemistry, Western Washington University
• 9/2006-7/2011 PhD, Pathobiology, University of Washington

Research Interests:

A primary focus of my work is investigating how factors in semen, especially extracellular vesicles, impact immunity in the female genital mucosa. How semen influences immunity has wide-ranging implications for outcomes including infertility and conception, susceptibility to sexually transmitted disease, and the success of vaccine-mediated immune protection against diseases like HIV.

Current Research:

• Immunomodulatory functions of extracellular vesicles in semen
• Impact of opioid use on HIV susceptibility and transmission, and on regulatory RNA cargo carried by semen
• Role of small non-coding regulatory RNAs in immunosuppression mediated by extracellular vesicles
• Determination of role of cell-free vs cell-associated virus in semen in sexual transmission of HIV

Memberships:

• The American Association of Immunologists
• The International Society for Extracellular Vesicles
• Society for Mucosal Immunology
