The University of Washington
In 1861 the Territorial University of Washington opened in downtown Seattle with one professor who taught a curriculum which included Latin, Greek, English, history, algebra, and physiology. With the arrival of statehood in 1889, the University was established as an institution of higher education, and its growth forced its relocation to the current campus north of downtown Seattle. The University now includes over 45,000 students on three campuses (Seattle, Bothell, Tacoma).
The University of Washington has seventeen major colleges and schools: Arts and Sciences, Architecture and Urban Planning, Business, Dentistry, Education, Engineering, Forest Resources, Information, Law, Medicine, Nursing, Ocean and Fishery Sciences, Pharmacy, Public Affairs, Public Health and Community Medicine, Social Work, and the Graduate School.
The University of Washington consistently ranks among the top schools. As of March 2006, the UW ranked:
- 7th among private/public colleges for research in the medical field (US News & World Report)
- 11th among the top US public universities (US News & World Report)
- 15th best university in the country (National Opinion Research Center)
- 17th best college in the world (Academic Ranking of World Universities)
According to annual rankings of graduate and professional programs by US News & World Report (2007), the University of Washington has the best primary care medical school in the country. It is the 14th straight year the school was ranked No. 1.
The campus includes 643 acres of carefully landscaped grounds with beautiful vistas of the Cascade Mountain range, Lake Washington, and majestic Mount Rainier. It is home to the University of Washington Huskies, who have been regular Rose Bowl participants, and also boasts Meany Hall for the Performing Arts, three theaters, the Ethnic Cultural Center and Theater Complex, the Henry Art Gallery, the Burke Museum with its emphasis on Northwest and Pacific Rim cultures, KUOW Public Radio, and KCTS Public Television.

Seattle
Seattle calls itself the Emerald City, the many-faceted jewel of the Northwest. Founded in 1851, and named after Chief Sealth who befriended the new settlers, Seattle is still considered by many as the last frontier of major American cities. Bounded by the Cascade Mountains to the east, the Olympic Mountains and the Pacific Ocean to the west, and Canada to the North, Seattle is known for its spectacular views and moderate climate (mild winters, cool summers, and average rainfall of 36 inches). A city of hills and dominated by water, Seattle has many unique and distinctive neighborhoods which are connected by award-winning bicycle paths, an excellent transit system, and strong community spirit.
Seattle is a city of contrasts—cosmopolitan and small town, continental and ethnic, sophisti-cated and laid-back. It hosts the Seattle Film Festival in May and June, the Folklife Festival in May, Bumbershoot with nationally known performers over Labor Day weekend, and the Seattle Rain Festival from September through June. Public art abounds throughout the city, as do espresso stands, bookstores and restaurants. Seattle is home to The Seattle Art Museum (SAM), the Seattle Symphony, the Seattle Youth Symphony, and many small theaters where young artists begin their careers in theater and music.
Camping, skiing, mountain climbing, sailing and boating opportunities are a quick drive from the city, and for the sports-minded, Seattle roots for the Mariners in baseball, the Seahawks in football, the Sonics in basketball, the Sounders in soccer, and, of course, the University of Washington Huskies.
For its children, Seattle has beautiful city parks, the award-winning Woodland Park Zoo,
the Seattle Aquarium with the world’s only aquarium-based salmon ladder and fish hatchery, an acclaimed Children’s Theater, and the Pacific Science Center. For young and old, the Washington State Ferries is the largest mass transit system in Washington, with over 23 million people utilizing them each year for work or for fun.
