A Systematic Review of Literature on Intrathecal Drug Delivery Systems for the Control of Chronic Pain

Investigators:   Jeanne Sears, Judy Turner, John Loeser

  1. Among patients with chronic non-cancer, non-AIDS pain, what are the effects of intrathecally delivered drugs on pain and on functioning, and do these effects change over time?   The primary focus will be on failed back surgery associated chronic and Chronic Regional Pain Syndrome, but other pain problems will be included.   The review will focus primarily on opioid medications (e.g., morphine, fentanyl, sufentanil, meperidine), although opioids may be also administered in conjunction with other drugs (e.g., bupivacaine, clonidine).
  2. Are there any patient characteristics that are significant predictors of response to intrathecal drugs?
  3. What are the complications (technical/equipment and biological) and their rates?
